Rated as one of the most popular state chief ministers in the country, Nitish Kumar has more than lived up to the promises he had made to the people of Bihar. Now, the senior Janata Dal (United) leader and Bihar chief minister is doing all he can to ensure that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comes to power in the center.

Nitish not only blamed the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the country but also called it the biggest impediment in the development of Bihar. Further, he minced no words in attacking Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Lalu Prasad Yadav and Lok Jan Shakti Party’s Ram Vilas Paswan, who have done little for the state despite holding ministerial posts in the center. Speaking to Arab News, Nitish explained his stand and spelled out his agenda.

Excerpts from an interview:

What has led to your growing disillusionment with the UPA government?

From Bihar’s point, the government at the center has been bunging a spanner at our every step. Also, our demand for ‘special package’ has been ignored.

After last year’s Kosi River floods, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the state and described it as a national disaster. However, when it came to giving money for rehabilitation of the victims, nothing was provided. We have already submitted a rehabilitation plan but nothing has moved. This is just one instance of the center’s apathy toward Bihar.

But that’s not all. To a large extent, the Congress party is also to be blamed for the criminalization of politics in the country. The party has set this trend.

So, voters in Bihar are disenchanted...

Yes, by all accounts, voters in Bihar feel let down by the central government. And they will teach Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan, who were ministers in the central government, a lesson at the hustings.

You have previously attacked Lalu for the state of affairs in Bihar when he was chief minister...

There was no law and order during the 15 years of Lalu-Rabri regime. Lalu talked a lot about empowering Muslims but did nothing concrete for them. Among others, I gave the state its first Muslim home secretary, Afzal Amanullah. The riot victims never used to get justice but 20 people have been awarded life term in Bhagalpur riot cases in my tenure.

Compensations have been given to the riot victims and steps have been taken to return properties to the rightful owner.

Moves like this have instilled a sense of security among Muslims. What’s more, law and order has improved. Criminals are on the run and people have started venturing out at night.

People have understood that Lalu and Paswan, who aroused caste sentiments and totally ignored key developmental issues, misled them. So, in this election, they have decided to punish them.

Clearly, you do not see much hope for the Rashtriya Janata Dal-Lok Jan Shakti Party alliance in this election.

There is strong anti-Lalu and anti-Paswan wave blowing across Bihar. The RJD-LJP alliance will be uprooted in this election. Just as the people of Hajipur were determined to elect Paswan in 1977, they are determined to defeat the LJP chief this time.

Will things change if the NDA comes to power?

Yes, if the NDA government comes to power, Bihar would certainly get a ‘special package’ to accelerate the pace of progress. I have even discussed this with NDA leader L.K. Advani and he has agreed to it. If things go as planned, Bihar will become a prosperous and model state.

How do you react to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Varun Gandhi’s inflammatory remarks against Muslims?

I would have taken immediate and stern legal action against Varun if he had made anti-Muslim remarks in Bihar.

கொழும்பு, ஏப். 21: இலங்கை ராணுவம் திங்கள்கிழமை நடத்திய தாக்குதலில் 1000 அப்பாவி மக்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். 2300 பேர் காயம் அடைந்துள்ளனர் எனறு விடுதலைப்புலிகள் இயக்கம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.  இது தொடர்பாக அதன் முக்கிய நிர்வாகி பூலிதேவன் கூறியதாவது: வலைஞர்மடம் மற்றும் மாத்தளன் பகுதிகளில் முன்னேறிச்செல்லும் இலங்கை ராணுவம் அங்குள்ள தமிழர்களை கேடயமாகப் பிடித்து வைத்துள்ளது. திங்கள்கிழமை நடந்த சண்டையில் சுமார் 1000 அப்பாவிகள் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். சுமார் 2300 பேர் காயம் அடைந்துள்ளனர்.  உலக அளவில் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட கொத்து வெடிகுண்டுகள், நாபாம் குண்டுகள், பாஸ்பரஸ் குண்டுகள் ஆகியவற்றை இலங்கை ராணுவம் பயன்படுத்துகிறது என்றும் தான் விடுத்த அறிக்கையில் பூலிதேவன் தெரிவித்தார்.  கெடு புறக்கணிப்பு: இதனிடையே, சரணடையுமாறு இலங்கை விதித்த 24 மணி நேர கெடுவை விடுதலைப்புலிகள் புறக்கணித்தனர். இதையடுத்து புது தாக்குதல்களை செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை தொடங்கிய இலங்கை ராணுவம், விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் ஆதிக்கத்தில் இருந்த புதுமாத்தளன் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு பகுதிகளை கைப்பற்றியதாக அறிவித்துள்ளது.  இலங்கையின் வடக்கே நடக்கும் இந்த போரை அடுத்து போர்ப்பகுதிகளில் சிக்கித் தவித்த தமிழர்கள் ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேறுவதாக இலங்கை தெரிவித்துள்ளது.  பிரபாகரனுக்கு விதித்த கெடுகாலம் முடிந்த சில நிமிடங்களில் இலங்கைப்படைகள் புதுமாத்தளன் மருத்துவமனையை கைப்பற்றியது. பாதுகாப்புப் பகுதிக்குள்ளும் ராணுவம் நுழைந்தது என்று அரசு செய்தித் தொடர்பாளர் தெரிவித்தார்.  17 சதுர கிலோமீட்டர் பகுதிக்குள் புலிகளின் ஆதிக்கம் சுருங்கிவிட்டது. அந்த பகுதிகளுக்குள்ளும் ராணுவம் நுழைந்துவிட்டது. போர்ப் பகுதிகளிலிருந்து இதுவரை தப்பிய தமிழர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 52 ஆயிரத்தை எட்டிவிட்டது.  அப்பாவி மக்களின் உயிரைக் காப்பாற்ற முடிந்த வகையில் செயல்படுகிறோம். போர் நிறுத்தத்துக்கு தயார் என்று மட்டுமே புலிகள் இணைய தளத்தில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.  ஆயினும் புலிகள் சரணடைய வேண்டும் என்று ராஜபட்ச விடுத்த அறிவிப்பில் எந்த மாற்றமும் இல்லை என்று இலங்கை தெரிவித்துள்ளது.  பாதுகாப்புப் பகுதிகளில் இருந்து பொதுமக்கள் அனைவரையும் மீட்ட பிறகு பிரபாகரனும் அவரது ஆதரவாளர்களும் ஆயுதங்களை ஒப்படைத்தே ஆகவேண்டும். இதற்கும் அவர்கள் மசியாவிட்டால் வேறு என்ன செய்வது என்பதை அரசு பரிசீலிக்கும். பிரபாகரன் மீது எத்தனையோ வழக்குகள் உள்ளன. அந்த வழக்கு தொடர்பான விசாரணைக்காக நீதிமன்றத்தில் அவரை ஆஜர்படுத்த வேண்டிவரும் என்று ராஜபட்ச தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  மேலும் ராஜீவ் கொலை வழக்கு தொடர்பாக பிரபாகரனை ஒப்படைக்கும்படி இந்தியாவும் வலியுறுத்தி வருகிறது என்றும் அவர் தெரிவித்ததாக இலங்கை பத்திரிகையான தி டெய்லி மிரர் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.  தீவிரவாதத்துக்கு விரைவில் முற்றுப்புள்ளி:இன்னும் சில தினங்களுக்குள் தீவிரவாதத்துக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைக்கப்படும் என்று ராணுவ தளபதி சரத் பொன்சேகா தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  பாதுகாப்பு பகுதிகளை ராணுவம் சுற்றி வளைத்துள்ளது. புலிகள் இயக்கத் தலைவர்கள் ஒன்று சரணடையவேண்டும் அல்லது சாகவேண்டிவரும் என்றார் பொன்சேகா.
